Galahs have benefited greatly from European settlement in Australia. Farmers entire crops have been destroyed by these hungry pink and grey flying machines.

Of course the farmer didn't sit back to enjoy these little critters, he shot them, poisoned them, trapped them, drowned them and basically tried to eradicate them.

No matter how hard the Australian farmers tried, the galahs just kept breeding and teaching their young ones what fun it is to steal the farmer's crops and how to evade the gun.

Did you know that the pink and grey galahs are responsible for the destruction of about one fifth of the total grain crops grown in New South Wales each year? That's a lot!

The pink and grey galahs are grey on their backs and pink on their breasts with cute pink underpants covering their legs. The crest is pale pink or sometimes nearly white.

Galahs are not very big but even though, a sizeable bird. They usually grow around 35 cm long and are strong flyers, reaching speeds up to 50 km/h. Pet galahs often fly away and are lost.

Galahs eat mainly seed but their diet also contains roots, flowers, nuts, fruit, foliage and insects. Watch your fingers if you offer sunflower seeds, it's their favourite!

Galahs usually nest in hollows in trees and are found just about all over Australia, including our off-shore island Tasmania. They are classed as good pets but also as a major pest.
