Jade is a hard, compact mineral that is often used to make jewellery and carved ornaments. The colour of Jade varies from white to dark green. One variety of Jade is Jadeite, a silicate of sodium and aluminium. It is rare and mainly mined in Burma and China. Nephrite (Jade) is more common and is a silicate of calcium, iron and magnesium. It is mined in New Zealand, Alaska and Wyoming.
