Jet is a hard, black mineral used for jewellery and ornaments which became popular in the 1800s when Queen Victoria of Britain lost her husband, Prince Albert and the nation went into mourning. The black mineral is a form of the soft coal, lignite and it takes a good polish. It is mainly mined in Yorkshire, England. If you look at Jet under a microscope you can see the texture of wood running through it. French Jet is black glass.
