A Nebula is a vast mass of gas and dust in space. The name Nebula comes from the Latin word meaning "cloud". Some Nebulae shine brightly and can be seen as glowing patches in the sky.

Other Nebulae, called dark nebulae do not shine and are visible only where they block out light from stars behind them They often look like large black patches in the star fields of the Milky Way.
