Although humans swim in the ocean we are not of the Nekton family. Nekton is the name given to all those animals that swim actively at various levels in the sea. These animals include fishes, squids, whales and many varieties of crustaceans such as prawns. Many animals belong to the Nekton group only during their adult life, at their younger stages they drift at the surface with the plankton.
The many swimming animals in the sea are collectively known as the nekton. Plankton which is carried about by currents consists of all the plants (phytoplankton) and animals (zooplankton).
