Liberia is a small country
on the west coast of Africa and has been influenced enormously by the United
States of America due to the American Colonization Society to settle freed American slaves
in Africa, beginning in 1822. The capital city, Monrovia, was named after United
States President James Monroe.
Liberia has a land area of
99,067 square kilometres (38,250 square miles) and is rich in wildlife like
leopards, although these have been decreasing rapidly, along with the elephant
and the bush cow. Monkeys, chimpanzees and antelopes are plentiful. Two of
the world's rare mammals found in Liberia are the manatee and the pygmy
hippopotamus.
