Mayotte

Mayotte

Estimate population 208,800 - Capital City Mamoutzou

Mayotte is an island in the Indian Ocean, northwest of Madagascar. It has French dependency though the Comorian government regards it as part of Comoros. Its land area covers 374 square kilometres (146 square miles). France obtained colonial control in 1843. The Mayotte people chose to remain dependent on France instead of joining the other Comoran islands when they declared their independence in 1975. In July 2000, 70% of Mayotte voters opted to accept greater autonomy however they still wanted to remain a part of France.
