Beautiful Rwanda is one of
Africa's smallest countries and covers an area of only 26,338 square kilometres
(10,169 square miles). Most of the country lies at an elevation of over 1,500
metres (5,000 feet) above sea level. Rwanda is bordered by Zaire and Lake
Kivu on the west, Uganda on the north, Tanzania on the east, and Burundi on the
south.
The Virunga Mountains are a
chain of volcanoes in the north. Numerous beautiful small lakes are scattered in
the southeast. Rwanda is rich in varied wildlife including elephants, lions,
chimpanzees, antelopes, zebras and rare mountain gorillas. The animals are of
course, protected in national parks and reserves.
