Saint Helena is a British
colony. The volcanic island is located in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,950 km (1,200 mi) west of Africa. It is
412 sq km (159 sq mi). Its dependencies are
Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.
It is ironic that
Napoleon's dream of a world empire ended on this tiny island of St. Helena. He
was exiled there in 1815 and died there in 1821. In 1840 his remains were
moved back to France and he was buried under the dome of the Hotel des
Invalides in Paris. Rich in history and beauty
is Saint Helena and well worth exploring.
