Estimate population 5,150,000 - Capital City: Ashkhabad

Turkmenistan, also know as Turkmenia, borders Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Afghanistan and the Caspian Sea and has an area of approximately 488,200 square kilometres (188,500 square miles).

The Kara-Kum desert covers more than 70 percent of Turkmenistan. The Kopet Dagh Mountains, on the border of Iran, stand out as one of its major natural features as well as the Amudarya river. Ashgabat (or Ashkhabad) is the capital city and an interesting place to visit.
