a - A 'Amy ape ate acorns.'
The letter 'a' has three sounds.
The first letter sound to teach is the
sound as in ape, train, rain etc. To show the sound of the first letter 'a' place a stripe over it. The small stripe teaches your student that this letter sound is pronounced as
(as in ape).
Step 1:
If you are a member of our ABC course copy and print: Letter formation chart and keep several copies. You may like to laminate one sheet. You could also try to enlarge it using a photocopier.

Step 2:
Show the letter
to your student and pronounce the sound several times.
Ask the student to repeat the letter sound several times.
Pronounce words that begin with the
sound (Amy ape ate acorns).
Step 3:
