With an area of 61 square kilometres (24 square miles) San Marino is the third smallest independent state in Europe, only Vatican City and Monaco are smaller. The huge, central limestone mass of Mount Titano towers over this exceptional country. The official language is Italian and postage stamps are San Marino's major source of revenue as well as tourism.
